Lauren Hume

My background as an art history student makes it hard not to analyse my work, however I endeavour to create art using emotions and memory- my heart rather than my head. Inevitably though, I see similarites in use of colour and other traits that remind me of works by other artists, and I am currently interested in the juxtaposition between the idea of every work being original and yet inherently an amalgamtion of everything we have each seen and heard, thought and felt throughout our lives. There is no escaping our influences, experience and history.

Having worked between China and the UK for some time now, I like to use things that I see in China and make them an important part of the subject matter of my work, whether abstractly or represented more realistically. This is how my own artefacts are created, and sometimes more obviously than not, a painting represents a certain period of someones life, a reminder of what you were doing at the time of making the work as well as at the time you saw or experienced whatever inspired that work.

In terms of materials; wood and resin are important materials for me, I appreciate natural colours and textures of wood in contrast with the artificialty of plastics. The significance in my work may be subtle, as with the effects of household products like clingfilm, forming a clean, shiny layer, or in framing certain shapeswith dried stems within a painting. I aim to continue experimenting with their versatility while ensuring that inspiration from my own history and travels feature prominently, for me, combining moving forward with looking back.
